Steampunk NZ Incorporated Society, hosts the annual Steampunk NZ Festival held over Kings Birthday weekend, complete with fashion show, market, street parade, gala ball and even teapot racing, parasol duelling and airship racing!

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, often incorporating an alternate, futuristic version of 19th century Victorian England. Steampunk also refers to many of the artistic forms including - clothing fashions, fiction writing, sculpture, graphic art and film. The versatility of the Steampunk genre attracts a wide range of people from different backgrounds.

 

Steampunk in New Zealand has a distinct identity and is internationally praised for its ‘can do’ attitude and Kiwi DIY approach. Whether it is the fashion, accessories, weapons or even means of transport seen sported by Kiwi Steampunkers, it is more than likely that the wearer has made it all themselves. This creativity is not just limited to wearable items; structural art from recycled materials is common amongst New Zealand Steampunk artists. 

 

The Steampunk NZ Festival started in 2009, when the League of Victorian Imagineers Steampunk exhibition ‘Tomorrow As It Used To Be' exhibition was held at Oamaru’s Forrester Gallery. Inspired by the creativity being celebrated, a ball and fashion show were added the next year. From humble beginnings, the now annual Steampunk NZ Festival has evolved into three days of events, workshops and activities, suitable for locals, tourists and Steampunk enthusiasts.

 

In 2016 The Guardian named Oamaru the 'Steampunk Capital of the World'.
